In a recent study it was found that motor vehicle collisions account for one third of all trauma in Northern Ontario. Highway 69 accounted for an alarmingly high percentage of these deaths and non-intersection accidents accounted for 77% of deaths. Head-on collisions accounted for 44.1% of these deaths in northern Ontario.

One of the recommendations for prevention from the report stated, "Avoid Northern Ontario highways."
